Black Ops fans uncover a cut tower defense Zombies mode hidden for 15 years

More than 15 years after Black Ops launched, fans have found a scrapped Zombies mode buried inside the game's recent PS4 port — and it's nothing like the survival mode that shipped.

YouTuber JTAG dug the mode out of the PS4 port and uploaded gameplay footage. It's clearly unfinished, but the concept is distinct: players would have placed turrets to stop zombie hordes advancing through a maze-like map. The camera sits in a bird's-eye view reminiscent of Bloons Tower Defense, though players could also drop to ground level and shoot enemies in standard Call of Duty fashion. The mode never made it to release, and the leading theory is that it was shelved in favor of Dead Ops Arcade — the hidden twin-stick arcade shooter that players could unlock via a secret computer terminal in the original Black Ops main menu. Dead Ops became a cult classic and has reappeared across multiple Black Ops titles since.

Treyarch has always treated Zombies as a sandbox for experimentation, which makes a scrapped tower defense variant feel right at home in the franchise's history. The original Zombies mode itself had an unlikely origin — a small team built it in secret without official Activision approval, using recycled assets from Call of Duty: World at War. It only made the final game after the team presented it to executives, who recognized it was worth shipping. That scrappy origin story is a big part of why Zombies carries so much goodwill with the Call of Duty community.

The mode would likely have stayed hidden indefinitely if not for the PS4 port giving dataminers a fresh build to dig through. A return seems unlikely given how rough the prototype is, but for longtime fans it's a rare look at what Zombies could have been.
