FF7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi is making it like there will never be another FF7 game

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi says he is developing the trilogy's finale as if it will be the last Final Fantasy 7 game ever made — no spin-offs, no future DLC, nothing. The game is currently set for release on April 8, 2027.

In an interview with Kotaku, Hamaguchi was direct about his mindset: "I'm approaching the development of Revelation as if there's never going to be another Final Fantasy 7 game… no spin-offs… no DLC in the future. We're making it as if everything we have for Final Fantasy 7 is going to be put into this game. That's why I've got this confidence, and I think we're going to beat the original's legend. We're going to become the new legend." The interview appears to have taken place before Square Enix confirmed that Sephiroth and Vincent Valentine DLC expansions are also in development, which complicates the "this is the end" framing somewhat.

Hamaguchi also spoke about the themes he wants Revelation to carry forward, pointing to Final Fantasy 7's diversity as something that was genuinely ahead of its time — particularly for a Japanese game made in the mid-1990s, when information about global cultures was far harder to come by in Japan. He expressed admiration for original producer Yoshinori Kitase and the team for building a world with varied characters, cultures, and perspectives decades before those conversations became mainstream. Final Fantasy 7 Remake launched in 2020 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth followed in 2024, with Revelation completing the trilogy.

Whether Hamaguchi's confidence translates into a game that genuinely surpasses one of the most beloved JRPGs ever made is a high bar to clear — the Remake project has been warmly received but also carries the baggage of modern triple-A game design. Community reaction to the bold claim will likely stay skeptical until more of Revelation is shown, but the director's all-in attitude at least signals Square Enix is not treating this as a routine franchise entry.
