Final Fantasy 14 director Yoshi-P admits he still doesn't get why everyone loves Chort

Naoki Yoshida — the director and producer of Final Fantasy 14, better known as Yoshi-P — has confessed he genuinely doesn't understand why Chort became such a massive community meme. He made the admission during a press Q&A at the game's Berlin Fan Festival.

Chort is a sub-boss in one of FF14's newest dungeons, The Clyteum. He's a hulking creature who curls into a ball and charges around the arena like a fleshy, oversized Sonic the Hedgehog — and the internet lost its mind over him almost immediately. His goofy name, his stocky build, and the weirdly patient stance he strikes while waiting for players to enter the room all combined into instant meme fuel. Yoshida said he was glad to hear about the warm reception but added, "honestly I couldn't really understand the appeal of Chort" and "I just couldn't understand like… why." He did walk it back slightly, conceding: "I can understand maybe a little. I mean, this is some huge bulky guy, and then suddenly he's standing there and then he rolls. So from that perspective, I can kind of understand."

Part of what makes Chort land so hard for English-speaking players is almost certainly the name itself — it just sounds inherently funny, in the same chaotic-internet-energy way that Big Chungus did during its peak. The dungeon name, The Clyteum, adds an extra layer of unintentional comedy that probably doesn't carry the same weight in Japanese. These kinds of cross-language accidental jokes are notoriously hard to explain to the people who made them.

Yoshida said the team genuinely enjoys watching the community latch onto unexpected things, and encouraged players to keep making noise when something clicks. "The development team is looking at all of the responses on social media, and we very much do enjoy looking at them," he said. "We have big smiles on our faces when things like this happen." So if a future patch sneaks in another suspiciously named dungeon boss, don't say you weren't warned.
