Final Fantasy 14's The Primals on playing Download Festival: 'Our drummer was probably this close to dying'

The Primals — Final Fantasy 14's official in-house rock band — played Download Festival, the UK's biggest rock and metal festival, marking their first non-Fan Festival appearance outside of Asia. The set was short at just 25 minutes, but by all accounts it hit hard.

The band — led by FF14 composer Masayoshi Soken and localisation lead Michael-Christopher Koji Fox, alongside members Eikichi Iawi, Tetsuya Tachibana, and GUNN — sat down with PC Gamer the day after the show, and all three were still buzzing. The pre-show chaos probably helped: a buggy that was supposed to return them to the stage area never showed up, leaving the band scrambling back on foot with only ten minutes to spare before going on. Fox says that killed any chance of pre-show nerves — by the time they hit the stage, it was pure momentum. The five-song setlist was deliberately curated for a crowd that might have never touched FF14, skipping the slower, more atmospheric Fan Festival staples in favour of the band's heaviest, most high-energy tracks. That decision came at a cost. "Our drummer was probably this close to dying," Fox said. Soken leaned in to add that he spent the entire set just shouting. Fox called it the most exhausted the band had ever been after a performance — despite it being their shortest set ever — because it was full throttle from the first note to the last.

The Primals have built a solid discography over the years, blending distorted guitars and raw vocals into arrangements of FF14's soundtrack that hold up outside the game's fanbase. That crossover appeal is exactly what made Download a logical step — the band's sound isn't niche enough to feel out of place at a mainstream rock festival, even if the source material is a 10-year-old MMO.

The show seems to have landed well, and the band's energy the morning after suggested this won't be their last appearance on a stage that has nothing to do with a Fan Festival. Whether that means more Western festival dates is still unclear, but the appetite is obviously there — from the band and, judging by the crowd reaction Fox described, from the audience too.
