First look at three cards from Magic: The Gathering's Hobbit crossover set

Magic: The Gathering is heading back to Middle-earth with a Hobbit-themed Universes Beyond set, and IGN has an exclusive first look at three cards from it. The set releases in paper on August 14, with digital clients MTG Arena and MTGO going live on August 11, and prerelease events at local game stores kicking off August 7.

All three revealed cards sit at uncommon rarity, making them legal in both Standard and Commander. Nasty Little Rabbit is a green creature built for Limited — it rewards decks that run creatures with four or more power, coming in early and scaling up over the course of a game. Fearsome Goblin Pair leans into the set's red-black goblin theme and ties into the amass mechanic, which builds a growing goblin army token over time. The most interesting of the three is Thror's Map, a colorless legendary artifact that fetches a basic land on entry and then offers a free loot effect — draw and discard — each turn. It's not the most powerful version of that effect in the format, but the combination of ramp and card filtering on a single artifact gives it real Commander appeal, especially in decks that care about dwarves or treasure synergies.

The Hobbit set is the latest entry in Magic's Universes Beyond line, which has been on a crossover tear lately — a Marvel set, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set, and an Avatar: The Last Airbender set have all dropped recently, with a Star Trek set still scheduled for later this year. One-off Secret Lair drops, like the God of War collaboration last year, round out the crossover slate. The line traces back to the original Lord of the Rings set in 2023, which became one of the most commercially successful Magic releases in years, though it ran into controversy earlier in 2025 when a reprint of the iconic One Ring card was found to potentially contain plagiarized artwork.

Expectations are high for The Hobbit given how well its predecessor performed, and the prerelease window starting August 7 will give players their first hands-on time with the full card pool. Whether Thror's Map finds a permanent home in Commander remains to be seen, but the broader set — dwarves, dragons, and Tolkien lore — has plenty to offer fans of both the source material and the game.
