God of War TV show recasts Atreus and Thrud for season 2 timeskip

Amazon's God of War live-action series is recasting two more characters for its second season — Atreus and Thrud — and unlike the ongoing Kratos situation, the reason here is a planned timeskip rather than injury or behind-the-scenes drama.

Casting calls spotted by MP1st list teenaged versions of characters codenamed "Joshua" and "Ruth," confirmed to be Atreus and Thrud respectively. Season one has Callum Vinson — a child actor known from Chucky — playing Atreus, and Island Austin playing Thrud. The teen Atreus description paints him as someone who went on a dangerous journey with his father, came away with a revelation about his destiny, and enters season two eager to uncover the truth of who he is — curious and empathetic, but vulnerable to manipulation. Teen Thrud is described as confident, sarcastic, and wise beyond her years, with a complicated relationship with her parents but a close bond with her grandfather, the king, whom she hopes will name her heir. Both roles require comfort with physical combat, with Atreus specifically needing archery skills.

The timeskip mirrors the jump between the 2018 God of War game and its 2022 sequel Ragnarok, where Atreus visibly aged and took on a much larger role in the story. The show appears to be compressing and reshaping that arc for television, and notably it's already introducing Thrud in season one — she didn't appear in the 2018 game at all, only showing up in Ragnarok. That suggests the series is pulling Norse pantheon characters into the story earlier than the games did. All of this is unfolding against the backdrop of the Kratos recast: original actor Ryan Hurst suffered a bicep injury during stunts and had to leave the project, forcing Amazon to reshoot at least four already-filmed episodes with a replacement yet to be announced publicly.

With Kratos still uncast and now two more roles opening up for season two, the production timeline remains uncertain. Whoever lands the teenage Atreus and Thrud parts will likely have a significant wait before cameras roll on season two, given how much season one still needs to sort out.
