Hell Clock 2.0 and Cursed War DLC: every major change explained

Hell Clock dropped its free 2.0 update on July 9, alongside the launch of console editions and the paid Cursed War DLC. The update is a substantial overhaul — new endgame systems, reworked combat mechanics, and a fully out-of-beta Ascension mode all land at once.

The headline free addition is the Journey of Nightmares, a seasonal-style system that deliberately avoids FOMO. Nightmare portals appear on floors and drop you into randomized levels packed with enemies; clear enough of them and a boss spawns, rewarding a Unique Relic. Progress through the system by completing tasks to unlock cosmetic rewards — no time pressure attached. Alongside that, Endless Nightmares replaces the old Abyss, Oblivion, and Void endgame modes with randomized zones across 16 difficulty tiers. Three shard types shape each run: Shards of Place set the tileset, Shards of Hope add reward affixes, and Shards of Fear stack dangerous debuffs as you push deeper. Both systems are free for anyone who owns the base game, with Endless Nightmares unlocking after campaign completion.

Ascension — Hell Clock's roguelike endgame mode — has been around since launch but was in beta until now. The full Penance tree is open, Hell 100 is reachable, and the mode is smoother overall with easier Gear and Relic access plus a new Blessing of Beginnings to ease early runs. The structure stays the same: allocate penances to raise hell level and difficulty, then complete five runs to beat the Floor 21 boss, earning extra attempts each time you do. Unique Blessings are also new — every skill now has one, they stack without a cap, and their effects mirror or exceed what you'd find on Unique Relics. On the combat side, Ailments and Endurance got a significant rework: Ignite deals damage faster and no longer removes the Oiled status, bleed base damage doubled from 40% to 80%, and Shock now adds 40% increased critical damage on top of its existing effect.

Maxroll has released a full suite of updated guides and a database covering all new Skills, Relics, and Unique Blessings for 2.0. Their Hell Clock Planner also got a notable quality-of-life upgrade — you can now upload your save file and instantly share a build link with other players.
