Kernel Hearts is out now on Xbox — an action RPG blending Argentine and Japanese culture

Kernel Hearts, the action RPG from Buenos Aires-based Ephemera Games, is out now on Xbox. The game follows four magical girls — the M.A.H.O.U unit — fighting angels in a post-apocalyptic Patagonia, and it blends Japanese pop culture aesthetics with deeply Argentine sensibilities in a way that feels genuinely personal rather than cosmetic.

The game started as a jam project in 2020 before growing into a full release published by Whitethorn Games. Game Director Akira wanted to capture the epic storytelling of long-form JRPGs and action RPGs without demanding the same time investment — so the team fused that narrative ambition with the shorter, replayable structure of a roguelike. The result is a story-driven game you can play in chunks without losing the thread. Character design follows the same philosophy: Akira's guiding rule was that "a character shouldn't just have a different weapon — you should be able to watch a few seconds of gameplay and immediately understand something about their personality." Each of the four characters delivers on that. Fernet fights with swords and spirits, making her the most versatile. Spika uses a katana with clean, disciplined strikes that mirror her personality. Laika brings raw physical power backed by a massive sword and heavy attacks. Dolce, the wildcard, weaves performance and dance into her combat style — a nod to classic magical girl archetypes.

Ephemera Games is an Argentine studio, and that identity runs through every layer of Kernel Hearts — from the Patagonian setting to small details like Fernet drinking yerba mate in an idle animation. Post-apocalyptic rebuilding is a familiar JRPG theme, but grounding it in a specific real-world geography gives it a texture most games in the genre don't have. Whitethorn Games, the publisher, has built a catalog around narrative-focused indie titles, and Kernel Hearts fits that brief while pushing into action RPG territory the label hadn't covered before.

Kernel Hearts is available now on Xbox. If the roguelike structure and ensemble cast land the way the developers intend, it could carve out a niche for players who love the ambition of JRPGs but can't always commit to a 60-hour run.
