MTG's 2027 roadmap revealed: Kamigawa returns, new underwater world, and more

Wizards of the Coast laid out its 2027 Magic: The Gathering set lineup at MagicCon: Amsterdam 2026, and it's a packed slate — a return to Kamigawa, a set built around a lost fragment of Magic's original plane, and a brand new underwater world called Nauctis. Designer interviews at the event filled in details beyond the official announcements.

The 2027 lineup includes Kamigawa: Titanbreach, which brings players back to the fan-favourite Japanese-inspired plane, alongside a set tied to Zhalfir — a region of Dominaria that was famously phased out of existence in the lore. The underwater setting Nauctis is an entirely new plane. Seven key details emerged from the designer interviews, covering topics ranging from a core game mechanic being sidelined, pop culture inspirations behind the new sets, and hints about the next Marvel crossover set following the 2025 Avengers collaboration.

Three sets are still scheduled to release in 2026 before the 2027 slate kicks off: Reality Fracture, The Hobbit, and Star Trek. Magic has leaned heavily into licensed crossovers in recent years, with Universes Beyond sets covering everything from Fallout and Final Fantasy to Assassin's Creed, so the Star Trek and Hobbit sets continue that trend. Kamigawa: Titanbreach marks the third visit to Kamigawa after the original Kamigawa block in 2004–2005 and the well-received Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty in 2022.
