Persona 4 Revival producer confirms Yosuke changes, beauty pageant scene rework, and MAPPA anime cutscenes

Atlus general producer Kazuhisa Wada spoke to press at Anime Expo 2026 and confirmed that Persona 4 Revival will make targeted changes to certain characters and scenes — with Yosuke bearing the brunt of the adjustments.

Wada was careful to frame the changes as surface-level rather than structural. "We haven't changed anything core about the characters," he told Anime Corner. "We've just changed the way we express some of this a little bit, mostly with Yosuke really. He's a little bit insensitive in terms of how he treats outsiders sometimes. We wanted to lighten that up and make it a little more fitting for the world that we live in now." He confirmed that the social links for Kanji and Naoto will not be altered "at base," signaling those fan-sensitive storylines are staying largely intact. Separately, Polygon reports that the beauty pageant event — a memorable and frequently discussed scene from the original — will also see changes in the remake. Wada also confirmed new content will be present in the game, though specifics weren't shared. On the production side, the anime cutscenes are being handled by MAPPA, the studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man.

Persona 4 Revival is a full remake of the 2008 PS2 JRPG, building on the legacy of Persona 4 Golden, the expanded version that became a cult classic on PS Vita and later PC. Yosuke's portrayal has been a long-running point of debate in the fanbase — some players read his behavior as realistic teenage awkwardness, others find his treatment of outsiders and queer-coded characters genuinely off-putting. The changes here follow a precedent Atlus set with Persona 3 Reload, which quietly reworked a scene widely considered transphobic from the original. Adding another layer of intrigue: dataminers long ago found unused voice lines on the original PS2 disc suggesting a scrapped romantic social link between the protagonist and Yosuke. Whether Revival revisits that cut content remains an open question — Wada didn't address it directly.

The Anime Expo panel was a major showcase moment for the series' 30th anniversary, with Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6 both featured.
