Persona 4 Revival is toning down Yosuke's more insensitive moments

Persona 4 Revival launches on February 18 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and Atlus has confirmed it won't be a straight remake — some characters are getting adjustments along the way.

At Anime Expo, general producer Kazuhisa Wada told Anime Corner that the team hasn't touched the core story or character motivations, but has "changed the way we express some of this a little bit, mostly with Yosuke." Wada described Yosuke as "a little bit insensitive in terms of how he treats outsiders sometimes" and said Atlus wanted to "lighten that up" to better fit the current era. One confirmed change is already visible in gameplay trailers: a line where Yosuke awkwardly says Yu is "good with his hands" has been rewritten to "actually, you do strike me as someone who'd be good at that" — which, notably, is closer to the original Japanese script than the localized version ever was.

Yosuke is one of Persona 4's most complicated party members. He's funny and loyal, but also frequently judgmental, casually homophobic in several scenes, and prone to playing up the teenage-pervert archetype in ways that aged poorly. The irony is that the original game contained unused voice lines suggesting he was a planned male romance option for protagonist Yu — content that was cut before release. In the non-canon spin-offs like Persona 4 Arena and Persona Q, an older Yosuke shows genuine self-awareness about his past behavior, which gives the character a quiet redemption arc across the broader franchise.

The concern some fans are raising is how far these changes go — whether Atlus smooths out just the crudest edges or flattens the character entirely. Wada's framing suggests restraint rather than a rewrite, but the proof will be in the final game when it ships in February.
