Pokémon Go Times Square Mewtwo are selling on eBay for up to $10,000

Some attendees of Pokémon Go's exclusive 10th anniversary Times Square event are selling their commemorative Mewtwo on eBay for thousands of dollars — breaking the game's rules and drawing widespread disgust from the broader community.

The Times Square event, held last week in New York, was invitation-only and drew around 2,000 attendees including Community Ambassadors, media, and influencers. Each participant caught a unique Mewtwo with a special Times Square cosmetic background and perfect "hundo" stats — a guaranteed 100% IV Pokémon, something Pokémon Go has never handed out before. Now some of those attendees are flipping their Mewtwo on eBay: completed listings show sales of up to $5,000, while at least one active auction has already climbed to $10,000. Several listings also reference "flying" to complete the in-game trade — community shorthand for GPS spoofing, itself a bannable offense — meaning sellers are potentially stacking two separate terms-of-service violations.

The backlash is hitting especially hard because the event was heavily staffed by Community Ambassadors, unpaid superfans who work with developer Scopely Explore (formerly Niantic) to organize local player communities. The timing made things worse: the exclusive event ran just ahead of a weekend Mewtwo raid event open to all players, who had to grind raid passes for even a chance at a hundo. Seeing hand-picked CAs turn that goodwill into a quick eBay payday has amplified existing frustration over the event's perceived elitism. Fan SchaferQuest777 called it out directly on X, arguing that selling the Mewtwo almost certainly violates CA terms of service and that Scopely should be able to identify offenders easily given the small attendee pool.

With only around 2,000 people at the event, tracking down which accounts no longer hold their unique Mewtwo — and which made suspiciously long "flying" trips to complete trades — would not be a major investigative challenge. Whether Scopely Explore acts on it is another question. IGN has reached out to the studio for comment, but no response has been issued publicly as of publication.
