Steam Machine is getting FSR 4 support thanks to a direct Valve and AMD collaboration

Valve has confirmed it's working with AMD to bring FSR 4 support to the Steam Machine, and says it's coming soon — though neither company has locked down an exact date. The Steam Machine runs an RDNA 3-based GPU, and FSR 4 was originally exclusive to RDNA 4 hardware, so this required a dedicated collaboration rather than an automatic rollout.

Valve told both Eurogamer and PC Gamer that FSR 4.1 is on the way, calling it a "significant improvement in upscaling graphical quality" and saying press units will be able to test it once it's available. AMD announced back in May that it planned to bring FSR 4 to RX 7000-series RDNA 3 cards by July, but that timeline appears to cover discrete GPUs only — not the semi-custom 28 CU RDNA 3 chip inside the Steam Machine. That's exactly why Valve had to go directly to AMD to secure support for its specific hardware configuration.

The news matters because the Steam Machine's specs are modest by modern PC standards, and upscaling isn't optional — it's essentially required to hit acceptable resolutions and frame rates on a living room TV. FSR 4 closing the gap with Nvidia's DLSS 4 in image quality is a genuine win for a device that can't use DLSS at all. The catch is that FSR 4's machine learning model carries more performance overhead than older FSR versions, and the Steam Machine's GPU wasn't what AMD originally designed it for. That extra cost could make FSR 4 a manual toggle for some games rather than a set-and-forget upgrade. There's also the question of game support — while the FSR Redstone compatible title list looks long, only around 20 games have FSR 4 natively built in. The rest rely on AMD's Adrenalin Driver software to enable it, and how that translates to SteamOS is still an open question.

For now, Steam Machine owners will have to wait. AMD's July target for RDNA 3 support gives a rough window, and Valve suggests the Steam Machine won't lag far behind — but no firm date has been given for either.
