Subnautica 2 players have drowned 15.6 million times since early access launch

Unknown Worlds dropped a batch of community stats on X to mark nearly two months of Subnautica 2 in early access — and the numbers are equal parts impressive and embarrassing. Since the game launched at 11 am EDT on May 14, 2026, players have logged over 58 million combined hours on the alien ocean planet Proteus.

The headline figure: players have drowned 15,636,881 times, making oxygen depletion the single biggest cause of death at 42.6% of all fatalities. That works out to roughly 192 drownings per minute across the entire early access window through July 9. For scale, the CDC recorded an average of 4,083 unintentional drowning deaths per year in the US between 2012 and 2021 — meaning Subnautica 2 players racked up more than 3,829 times that number in under two months. Worth noting: the game hands players oxygen tanks and fills its oceans with alien plants that regularly exhale breathable bubbles. On the brighter side, the community collectively swam 545,615,747 kilometers — about 86.8% of the distance from Earth to Jupiter — and gathered over 331 million water slugs along the way. Players also built 5,887,642 Tadpole submersibles in total, though the standout individual achievement belongs to one player who somehow constructed 195 of them in a single run.

Subnautica 2 is the follow-up to Unknown Worlds' cult survival game Subnautica and its standalone expansion Below Zero, both of which built a devoted fanbase around underwater exploration, base building, and — apparently — a chronic inability to surface in time. The sequel launched into early access with co-op support, which the original lacked, making it a significant step forward for the series. Early access survival games live or die by community engagement, and 58 million hours in under two months suggests the player base is very much invested.

The studio's first proper update for Subnautica 2 is arriving this week, so the drowning count is only going to climb. Whether players will finally learn to watch their oxygen meters remains, as Unknown Worlds might put it, one of the deep's great mysteries.
