Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad finally lets you live the death game from floor one

Bandai Namco's upcoming action RPG Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online is the first game in the franchise to put players inside the Aincrad arc from the very beginning — floor one, death game and all. Producer Yosuke Futami told Kotaku that in 13 years of SAO games, none of them ever let you start from that iconic first level, and that gap is exactly what Echoes of Aincrad is built to fill.

The game opens with the moment straight out of episode one: Kayaba Akihiko traps thousands of players in the virtual MMORPG, the log-out button vanishes, and dying in-game means dying for real. Futami says the team specifically wanted players — including newcomers who've never touched the anime — to feel that original panic firsthand. You don't play as Kirito this time; instead you create a custom character who is trapped alongside him, forming your own party with new characters in a brand-new story. That shift away from Kirito is also why the title structure flipped: the SAO branding moves to the end, giving you Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online rather than the usual format. The opening song is Live to Survive by Japanese pop artist Aimer, chosen deliberately to echo the nostalgic feel of the anime's original opening, Crossing Field by LiSA.

The SAO game series stretches back to 2012's Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment on PSP, and most entries have followed Kirito through alternate timelines outside the anime's canon. The one prior exception is 2018's Fatal Bullet, which also featured a custom protagonist — though Kirito still dominated that game, right down to a dedicated Kirito Mode. Echoes of Aincrad goes further by centering the entire experience on the player's own character and story within the Aincrad setting.

Futami hinted — carefully stressing he is not confirming anything — that the new naming format could open the door to future games exploring other SAO arcs without Kirito at the center. No release date has been announced yet, but the project is clearly positioned as a fresh entry point for lapsed fans and newcomers alike.
