TennoCon 2026: Warframe Tau expansion revealed alongside Soulframe updates

Digital Extremes held TennoCon 2026 over the weekend, and the show delivered two major reveals: a full first look at Warframe: Tau, the game's first entirely new star system, and a substantial Soulframe update centered on a new narrative questline called Warsongs.

Warframe: Tau is set in the Tau System, orbiting a binary star, and the expansion's opening area is Fornax — a sprawling Sentient ring city soaked in madness-inducing black rain and overrun by criminal factions. The central mission is to infiltrate the Sentient underworld and take down The Hunra, Fornax's mob boss, with help from Albrecht Entrati. The new Chimera Warframe built for this job is Brysko — part-Warframe, part-Protoframe — a noir-styled detective type who communicates via inner monologue and is voiced by Critical Role's Matthew Mercer. His arsenal includes a pair of Fist weapons called Rain & Shine and an Exalted Pistol called the Corecracker. New enemies, the Fornax Drowners, are an evolved Sentient faction distinct from anything in the Origin System. Digital Extremes also confirmed a second, as-yet-unnamed location will launch alongside Tau later in 2026. Community Director Megan Everett cited The Sopranos and L.A. Noire as aesthetic touchstones, and Creative Director Rebecca Ford's love of The Sopranos reportedly shaped much of Fornax's mafia-themed design. Tau also introduces Portau, a new in-game card minigame that blends poker with Sentient-themed mechanics using Blooms, Cores, Moons, and Suns. Before Tau drops, a major update called Iceblade of Narin adds a new story quest, a new ice-elemental Warframe, a customizable Orokin vessel, Warframe reworks, and new Nightwave missions. On the crossover front, Excalibur is now available as a cosmetic outfit in Fortnite.

Warframe: Tau has been teased for years — the Sentient home system has been referenced in lore since the early days of the game, and TennoCon 2025 formally confirmed the expansion was coming in 2026. Community Director Everett described Tau as "one of the biggest updates" Digital Extremes has ever made to the game. The Tau reveal also marks a significant aesthetic shift for Warframe: the traditional blues and golds are gone, replaced by a grimy, alien-noir palette that press coverage compared to Nobody Wants to Die and Night City, while remaining distinctly Warframe in its Sentient grotesquerie. On the Soulframe side, the game is still in alpha, but the Warsongs questline — described as the most cohesive demo the game has shown yet — introduces Ben Starr as antagonist Tempest Bayor and Jennifer English as player ally Empress of Eidvel, both actors known from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Mounts, a long-requested feature, are also confirmed for Soulframe's upcoming Alca update.

Reaction from press who attended TennoCon was broadly enthusiastic, with multiple outlets calling it a return to form for Digital Extremes. The TennoLive Relay in-game event runs until July 13 at 10 a.m. ET, after which players who have completed Vor's Prize can access and personalize their own Vessel from any Dry Dock.
