Two brothers jailed for stealing over £71,000 worth of Pokémon TCG cards from small UK shops

Keith Johnson, 33, and his brother Shane Johnson, 37, have pleaded guilty to a string of burglaries targeting small Pokémon TCG retailers across England, with total losses exceeding £71,000 in stolen cards and shop damage. Keith has already been sentenced to 29 months in prison, while Shane faces sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court on July 31.

The brothers' first hit was Celestial Collectables in Warrington — a shop specialising in Pokémon memorabilia and TCG — where they smashed through the front door, grabbed £62,000 worth of cards, and caused over £3,000 in structural damage before fleeing in a white Ford Transit van. They then targeted further Pokémon card shops in Stockton Heath and Warwickshire, and The Graded Gallery in Rugby, where damages alone topped £9,000. Police traced the van's movements to the brothers' address, searched the property, and recovered the stolen cards. DC Hannah Smith summed it up bluntly: "The overwhelming evidence collected through our extensive enquiries put them at both crime scenes giving them no choice but to plead guilty. The brothers will now have to pay the price for their part in their criminal Pokémon enterprise."

The case is a stark reminder of how valuable Pokémon TCG stock has become — and how that value makes small independent card shops an increasingly attractive target. The problem is partly structural: The Pokémon Company has consistently printed less stock than the market demands, a pattern that worsened sharply after the Prismatic Evolutions set drove demand to fever pitch. Supply has started to stabilise somewhat, with Destined Rivals stock more widely available, but another crunch could be on the horizon with the 30th Anniversary expansion approaching.

For the shops targeted, the hope is that their local communities have rallied around them — independent card stores tend to run on tight margins, and a £62,000 smash-and-grab can be genuinely devastating. Cheshire Police, for their part, couldn't resist the obvious quip on the arrests: "gotta catch 'em all."
