Warframe adds Matt Mercer and a D&D-inspired RPG mode in the Tau expansion

Digital Extremes announced two major additions to Warframe at TennoCon 2026: Critical Role's Matt Mercer is joining the game as a voice actor in the upcoming Tau expansion, and a new in-game RPG mode called Fables & Frontiers — described as "legally distinct" from Dungeons & Dragons — launches in August.

Matt Mercer's casting was confirmed at TennoCon 2026, with Digital Extremes calling it a "dream come true" to bring the Critical Role dungeon master into Warframe. Fables & Frontiers is a tabletop-style RPG experience built inside Warframe, clearly riffing on D&D's fantasy trappings while keeping enough distance to avoid any trademark headaches. The mode is set to go live in August, giving players a chance to step away from the usual sci-fi shooter loop and roll through a fantasy adventure — with Amir, one of Warframe's recurring characters, finally getting to participate.
