Bungie commits to unvaulting Destiny 2 content and confirms more Destiny is coming

Bungie has broken its post-Destiny 2 silence with a surprise video address, confirming the studio is "absolutely not done with Destiny" and committing to unvault campaigns, destinations, and raids that were removed from the game. Studio head Poria Torkan and head of product Josh Deane delivered the message directly to fans, with Torkan acknowledging the studio needs to earn back trust rather than ask for it. Deane was explicit about what's coming: Bungie will unvault Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids — content he admitted "never should have been ripped away to begin with." The studio's written post on Bungie.net framed Destiny as foundational to its future, crediting the community's vocal pushback — comments, livestream chat takeovers, and sustained pressure — as a real factor in the decision. Bungie also outlined a three-tier roadmap: short-term changes expanding what Marathon can offer players, mid-term unvaulting work on Destiny 2, and longer-term new Destiny content in an unspecified form. The studio was careful not to overpromise, noting the unvaulting work is not a small job and will take time. The content vault, introduced in 2020, became one of the most damaging decisions in Destiny 2's history. Removing entire campaigns — starting with the original 2017 Red War — didn't just shrink the game's file size, it shattered the narrative throughline and raised serious questions about paying for content that later disappeared. By 2022, much of the content that defined the game's early years was gone, including signature raids widely regarded as some of the best cooperative FPS level design ever made. Destiny 2's final update, Monument of Triumph, dropped in June, and the studio's survival has since been tied uncomfortably to Marathon — a game that hasn't yet demonstrated it can carry that weight alone. The community response has been cautiously hopeful rather than euphoric — fans remember too many broken promises to go all-in immediately. Bungie's own messaging reflects that awareness: "We're not asking for your trust. We know we have to earn it." What happens next depends entirely on whether the studio can execute on a roadmap that, for once, doesn't overpromise — and whether Marathon can stabilize enough to give Bungie the runway to do it.
