Bethesda confirms Fallout 5 in pre-production, Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters in the works

Bethesda has officially confirmed that Fallout 5 is in pre-production, alongside remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. On top of that, Obsidian Entertainment is developing a new Fallout game — making this the most active the franchise has ever been at once.

In a message to fans, Todd Howard said Fallout is "one of our biggest priorities today" and that "multiple Fallout projects" are in active development. Fallout 5 is described as the "long-range destination," while the remasters have no announced release dates. Obsidian's new Fallout game is confirmed but still a mystery — it could be a New Vegas sequel or something else entirely. Fallout 76 is getting a major expansion in 2027 called Raven Rock, a prequel story to Fallout 3. Fallout 4 has now sold over 35 million copies, and Fallout Shelter has reached 250 million players. A Fallout Shelter unscripted TV show is also in development with Amazon Studios and Kilter Films. Bethesda is also planning a live Fallout Day celebration in Washington, D.C. for the franchise's 30th anniversary in 2027.

Howard also addressed the long-running fan narrative about a rivalry between Bethesda and Obsidian — the idea that BGS resents Obsidian for making the beloved Fallout: New Vegas. Howard dismissed it as "fan chatter," telling Windows Central there is "a huge amount of mutual respect" between the two studios. He said BGS has always looked for the right opportunity to collaborate with Obsidian, and that moment has now arrived. Howard had previously praised Obsidian's New Vegas work as far back as 2019, saying "there's only one group that we really trust to do this." Obsidian was affected by the recent Xbox layoffs and reportedly had Avowed 2 canceled, but the studio is now channeling its Fallout expertise into this new project.

The sheer volume of simultaneous Fallout announcements is unprecedented for the franchise. With Fallout 5 in pre-production, two remasters, an Obsidian collab, a Fallout 76 expansion, and a TV spinoff all confirmed at once, Bethesda is clearly leaning hard into the momentum built by the Amazon Prime Video Fallout series. No release dates have been given for any of the major titles, so the wait — especially for Fallout 5 — is still a long one.
