Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced launched without two of the original game's most beloved combat features — hidden blade kills and the ability to pick up and use enemy weapons. Game director Richard Knight addressed the omissions in a new interview with YouTuber JorRaptor, and the short answer is: they were lower priority.
Knight explained that the team focused on rebuilding core combat from the ground up, and Edward already had enough tools to work with. "During development, if you looked at Edward — he's so powerful right now and has so many tools, and so we prioritized core combat because we needed to nail that," he said. "Something like throwing weapons, while it's cool, it's just like, 'He already has ten ways to kill somebody.' So, given the cost to reinvent the feature and rebuild it from the ground up with today's characters, rigs, and animations, there's a lot more that goes into it. It was just lower-priority for us." The new system does bring genuine improvements — visible enemy health and defense bars, a reworked counter chain-kill system, and new moves like a kick, sweep, and easier rope dart access — but the loss of musket takedowns and axe swings is a real gap for fans of the original.
Black Flag Resynced has been a commercial hit despite the controversy. The game moved two million copies on day one, and its day-one DLC pulled in $1 million on Steam alone. The original Black Flag, released in 2013, is widely regarded as one of the high points of the Assassin's Creed series, so any deviation from its formula was always going to draw scrutiny — especially cuts to combat variety that players spent years mastering.
Knight stopped short of promising the features will return post-launch, but left the door open: "We can't make any promises, but we're listening to the community. We're interested in what people want the most." Given the game's strong sales and Ubisoft's expanded live-service hooks — weekly challenges and a cash shop are already in — there's at least a financial incentive to keep building on the base game.
