Deltarune Review (Switch 2): Chapters 1–4 Plus Chapter 5 Impressions

Deltarune has landed on Switch 2 as an official paid release, bundling all currently available chapters and promising the remaining ones as they finish development. The game is now past the halfway point of its story with Chapters 3 and 4 releasing simultaneously alongside this paid launch. Toby Fox has been building Deltarune in episodic chunks since the first chapter dropped seven years ago, with Chapter 2 following in 2021. The Switch 2 release collects everything so far and locks in future chapters for buyers — no additional purchases needed when the remaining content arrives.

Deltarune is a spiritual successor to Undertale, Fox's breakout 2015 RPG that became a cult phenomenon for subverting JRPG conventions and leaning hard into player choice and meta-narrative. Deltarune carries that same DNA — the review calls it "superbly subversive" and a worthy successor to Undertale's legacy — while building a larger, more structured story across its chapters. The incomplete state of the game hasn't stopped it from feeling like a satisfying experience in its own right, according to Nintendo Life's assessment.

With Chapter 5 now out and impressions added to the review, attention turns to when the final chapters will wrap development. Fox has kept a characteristically low profile on timelines, but the paid release signals the project is moving toward its endgame.
