Insomniac Games stepped in to clear up a wave of fan confusion after the launch trailer for Marvel's Wolverine sparked debate over a purple-sword-wielding villain — with a large chunk of viewers convinced they were looking at Psylocke.

The studio posted a single-word reply on social media — "Deathstrike" — alongside a clip of the character, making it plain that the sword user is Lady Deathstrike, not Psylocke. The confusion spread across YouTube, Instagram, and X in the days after the trailer dropped as part of Sony's State of Play presentation. The culprit seems to be the glowing purple blade: Psylocke is famously associated with a psionic energy sword in X-Men lore, so when a similar weapon appeared on screen, fans jumped to conclusions. Lady Deathstrike's actual design in the game — her vest, hair, and most distinctively her elongated finger claws — has been visible in earlier footage, including July's Ain't No Hero trailer, but the sword threw people off. Insomniac hasn't explained in-story why Deathstrike is carrying it.

Lady Deathstrike is one of Wolverine's most iconic adversaries in Marvel comics, sharing his adamantium skeleton and regenerative abilities, which makes her a natural fit as a major antagonist here. Insomniac has been building toward Marvel's Wolverine for years as a standalone PS5 title separate from its Spider-Man series, and the game has confirmed appearances from other X-Men regulars including Jean Grey and Sabretooth. Psylocke has not been officially confirmed for the roster, though her absence from announcements doesn't rule her out entirely.
