Josh Sawyer calls the Fallout TV show one of the best game adaptations he's ever seen

Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer has come out swinging for the Fallout TV show, calling it an amazing adaptation and one of the best game-to-screen translations he's watched. He made the comments in a recent interview with The 41st Precinct, saying he watched both seasons as they aired.

Sawyer acknowledged the bar for videogame adaptations isn't always high, but said the show clears it comfortably. He had particular praise for Justin Theroux's performance and was relaxed about the creative liberties taken with New Vegas's setting — including the now-infamous Dinky the Dinosaur landmark being rotated to face a different direction than it does in the game. "I get why people get upset about that, but also the scene wouldn't work at all" if Dinky's orientation matched the game, he said, laughing it off. He admitted any writer will spot things they'd have done differently, but dismissed those as personal nitpicks rather than real complaints.

Sawyer isn't the only Fallout veteran who's been vocal about the show. Series co-creator Tim Cain has also praised it publicly via his YouTube channel. Sawyer's relaxed stance fits a position he's held in earlier interviews — that he sees himself as "a guest" in the Fallout universe rather than a gatekeeper, and that a TV production made a decade and a half after New Vegas doesn't need his sign-off to be valid. That's a notably generous attitude in a fandom where debates over lore accuracy can get intense.

The Dinky comment will likely stir up the usual corners of the Fallout community, but Sawyer seems unbothered — "maybe people will say I'm a traitor to Fallout now," he joked. With season two already out, the show has clearly won over at least some of the people who built the world it's drawing from.
