Marvel's Wolverine Is Shaping Up as the Most Violent Superhero Game Ever Made

Insomniac's Marvel's Wolverine is drawing serious attention — and some skepticism — ahead of release, with early looks confirming the game is leaning hard into gore, rage, and a darker tone than anything the studio has done before.

The violence isn't incidental. After a single fight, Logan is soaked in blood and his body is visibly shredded before his healing factor kicks in. Insomniac has built in violence customization settings for players who want a less intense experience, but the default presentation is extreme by any superhero game standard. One in-game ability, Rage Mode, appears to draw directly from the 2020 comic series Wolverine: Black, White & Blood. The tone overall pulls from Sony's God of War template — brutal combat punctuated by heavy, introspective monologues about Logan's past — though at least one critic at Polygon finds that formula pushed close to self-parody here.

The tonal shift makes sense given the source material. Wolverine in the comics has always been a hyper-violent, adult-oriented character — a far cry from the comparatively restrained versions seen in most X-Men films. Hugh Jackman's R-rated outings in Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine came closest to capturing that, but even those films sit below the comics in raw brutality. Insomniac's Spider-Man games were critically acclaimed but deliberately light in tone; Wolverine is a deliberate pivot, and the character's origin story — young James Howlett watching his father murdered, bone claws erupting from his hands in a burst of uncontrolled rage — gives the studio plenty of dark material to work with.

Reaction is split. Some see the extreme violence as the most faithful Wolverine adaptation in any medium. Others, including Polygon, are calling it the biggest disappointment of the PS5 era — a verdict that suggests the execution isn't landing for everyone even if the ambition is clear. How the final game balances Logan's rage with coherent storytelling will determine whether Insomniac's gamble pays off.
