Onimusha: Way of the Sword gets a free prequel webtoon following Sasaki Ganryu

Capcom's Onimusha: Way of the Sword only just launched, and it already has an official companion webtoon to go with it. The prequel webcomic, subtitled Fated Rivalry, is free to read on Webtoon and drops new chapters every Saturday.

Fated Rivalry follows Sasaki Ganryu — Miyamoto Musashi's rival — as he hunts for power after a humiliating defeat at Musashi's hands. His quest leads him to an Oni Gauntlet, a supernatural artifact that gives him strength no ordinary blade can match. The story feeds directly into the events of Way of the Sword, and the publisher says it stays faithful to established series canon. The comic is produced by Laurel Pursuit, a US-based studio known for distributing the Dungeon Crawler Carl graphic novel and original webcomics like Defiance of the Fall. The creative team on the Onimusha webtoon specifically includes Webtoon artists jjolee, hilluhri, and BAEKSSE. The first chapter dropped last Saturday and has already cleared 20,000 reads.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set in the Edo period, picking up more than two decades after the previous mainline entry, Dawn of Dreams. The series has flirted with other media before — a film adaptation was pitched in the early 2000s but never made it off the ground, and a Netflix anime arrived in 2023, though most fans treat that as non-canon. Fated Rivalry is a different proposition: it's positioned as a direct, canon lead-in to Way of the Sword rather than a loose spin-off.
