Persona 4 Revival is toning down Yosuke's homophobia, producer confirms

Atlus producer Kazuhisa Wada has confirmed that Persona 4 Revival will soften Yosuke Hanamura's more offensive moments, telling Anime Corner at Anime Expo that the team wanted to make the character "a little bit more fitting for the world we live in now."

Wada was careful to say Atlus hasn't changed much "about the story or the character's thoughts or how they act or anything" — the adjustments are "mostly Yosuke, really." In the original 2008 game, Yosuke is openly hostile toward party member Kanji Tatsumi, who is heavily implied to be gay, going as far as suggesting Kanji might assault him and the protagonist while sharing a tent. He also mocks the player character for any gesture toward femininity or same-sex attraction. That characterization carried over into the Persona 4 anime adaptation and Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, cementing Yosuke's reputation in the community as a straightforwardly homophobic character the original game never bothered to call out.

Persona 4 launched in 2008 in Japan and arrived in the West in 2009, with the expanded Persona 4 Golden following on PS Vita in 2012 and later on PC and modern consoles. The game's central theme — accepting yourself and others for who you are — has always made Yosuke's treatment of Kanji feel like a glaring contradiction. Notably, data miners have found remnants of a scrapped romance route for Yosuke that would have framed his behavior as the lashing-out of a closeted character; fans have since built mods to restore it. Wada's comments have some players hoping Revival might finally bring that route back, though neither source expects Atlus to go that far.

The community reaction is mixed: some welcome any change, while others, including the Rock Paper Shotgun writer who played Golden just last month, worry Atlus is smoothing things over rather than addressing the contradiction head-on. Persona 4 Revival is currently slated for release next year.
