Atlus says it couldn't reassemble Persona 4's original English cast — but the actors tell a different story

Atlus has explained why Persona 4 Revival features an entirely new English voice cast, and the official explanation is already clashing with what the original actors have said publicly. Director Kazuhisa Wada told GamesRadar that the studio simply couldn't lock down enough of the returning cast to make it work, leading to a full restart: "There were quite a few people who we weren't able to get. So we're like, OK, I guess we have to kind of once again roll up our sleeves. Alright, let's start over. Let's get a whole new cast in and let's do our best."

The problem is that several original cast members went on record last year saying the opposite — that they were never contacted, or were actively turned down when they reached out. Yuri Lowenthal, who voiced Yosuke and has since become one of the most recognizable names in games thanks to his role as Peter Parker in Insomniac's Spider-Man, accidentally confirmed the remake's existence by revealing he had "begged" Atlus to let him return, only to be refused. In a since-deleted Bluesky post he wrote: "No, I will not be returning as Yosuke for the Persona 4 remake. I asked. Maybe I even begged, but they don't want me to come back." Amanda Winn Lee, who played Yukiko, and Erin Fitzgerald, who played Chie, both stated publicly that Atlus never approached them either.

The full original cast reads like a who's-who of modern voice acting royalty — Johnny Yong Bosch, Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, Yuri Lowenthal — names that have only grown bigger in the nearly two decades since Persona 4 first released in 2008. That star power almost certainly comes with a matching price tag, and cost is the elephant in the room that Atlus hasn't addressed directly. It's worth noting that Troy Baker and Laura Bailey were themselves replaced in later Persona 4 spinoffs — by Matt Mercer and Ashley Burch respectively — so recasting isn't unprecedented in this franchise.

Wada added that Atlus "respected the work that the original cast did," which some fans read as a hint that the studio preferred a clean break over a partial reunion. But that framing sits uncomfortably alongside actors who say they were willing and available. The community reaction has been one of genuine disbelief, with many players skeptical that availability alone explains the decision. Whether the full picture ever comes out, Revival launches with a brand-new cast and a PR headache that isn't going away anytime soon.
