A September Nintendo Direct Is Almost Certain — Here's Why

Nintendo has held a Direct in September in nine of the last ten years, and 2025 looks set to continue that streak. The only break was 2024, and even then a Partner Showcase and Indie World event landed on August 27. History alone makes a September Direct a safe bet.

Two major announcements are overdue and could anchor the show: release dates for The Duskbloods and the Ocarina of Time remake, both confirmed for 2025 but still without firm launch windows. Nintendo also has a pattern of using September Directs to preview the following year's lineup — the September 2024 Direct revealed Switch 2 titles Mario Tennis Fever, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, and Pokemon Pokopia, all of which launched in the first half of 2026. The September 2023 Direct did the same with Princess Peach: Showtime and the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remaster. Past September Directs have landed on September 12, 2025 being the most recent, with prior events on September 14, 2023, September 13, 2022, September 23, 2021, September 17, 2020, September 4, 2019, September 13, 2018, September 13, 2017, and September 1, 2016.

Early 2027 on Switch 2 is still largely unscheduled, which gives Nintendo plenty of reason to start filling that calendar now. Xenoblade Genesis is one title that could slot into that window, and Pokemon Winds and Waves is another possibility — though Nintendo could just as easily surprise with something entirely new, as it often does.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but the combination of historical precedent, pending release date announcements, and an open early-2027 slate makes a September Direct feel less like speculation and more like a formality. Expect Nintendo to have a lot to say about Switch 2's holiday lineup and beyond.
